8mm cine film [taken by Jimmy Priddy GM3CIG] of the Scottish Radio Amateurs mainly from Dunfermline who attempted to contact Arecibo in Puerto Rico via the Moon on 70cm in 1965. Callsign used was that of Harry GM3FYB, other amateurs in this clip include GM3ENJ, GM3EGW, GM3CIG. Their morse code was recorded on tape at Arecibo. Location was a remote site in the East Neuk of Fife called Cassingray, a former RAF beacon station. The Film starts with a meeting of the group in Dunfermline at the QTH of Harry GM3FYB, with we believe Peter G3LTF who was there for the 1965 VHF Convention. Also present was G3FZL RSGB VHF Manager. We then see the drive through the roads of 1960′s Fife, including Kirkcaldy and arrive at Cassingray with a look over the landscape down to the River Forth. The erection of the homemade polar mounted, 15 foot diameter parabolic dish antenna then takes place. Frustratingly that is all of the footage that we have of this event. No sound track either. Thanks to Jimmy Priddy, GM3CIG for transferring the 8mm film to video tape a few years ago.

I do not want to bore you with my family home movies, they will not interest you, The films were done using a Kodak Brownie Funsaver 8mm movie camera. I just wanted to show you that if you have a good movie projector and the correct camcorder you can do a fair job of film to video conversion without paying an arm and a leg to have a pro do it. Back in 1990 I had a B&H regular 8mm movie projector and using an old Sony CCD-V5 8mm video camcorder you can get good results by simply projecting the movie on a small movie screen. Sorry to say I no longer have the Sony or the Kodak. But back than I did manage to copy the film on an 8mm video tape using the Sony CCD-V5 camcorder. I bought a cheap USB dongle to put the video into the computer and as a result got much better quality as you will see watching the LBJ 1965 film re-do. I hope your not too bored with my family films, if you are, I will understand. NOTE: After using the cheap .99 “dongle” I got on eBay, I found that after I tried to use it again it did not work, I found out you have to use their editing program Ulead Video Studeo SE DVD that came with it. That program allowed me to change it from PAL to NTSC. It is working OK so far.

8mm Film to Video Transfer Project: Design Your Own High Quality Transfer System
It is hard to believe that today in the 21st century there are people out there that still use the outdated VCRs and analog camcorders for 8mm movie to video transfers. To start with, they use inferior screen projection combined with the VCR capture and edit and sometimes VCR to VCR copy. This results in very poor final video quality. So, here is the book that outlines the procedure that uses the modern 21st century cameras combined with video processing and direct capture that produces sharp vi

This year I took on the task of transferring my grandfather’s 8mm film to DVD video. The capture process from film to video camera, although tedious, was only the tip of the iceberg. This clip show the results of postprocessing using avisynth scripts to: stablize camera shake, remove dirt and scratches, sharpen blurry detail, improve detail in shadow areas, correct white balance, correct colors, and then upconvert from original 16 fps to smooth looking 30 fps using motion interpolation.
